Gary Barnes now offers two complete rear end gearboxes. The gearboxes come fully assembled, and all parts are in stock. By using CNC technology, we now produce the finest gearbox case from billet aluminum. Unlike the sand cast or investment cast gear cases, the K&G case is stronger and the machined areas are held to exact tolerances.

The Standard Gearbox

The input shaft on the standard gearbox has two bearings, side by side. Axle bearings are held in place with snap rings as well as the pinion bearings. The axle is made of 3/8 inch diameter stock on a CNC lathe. Hardened steel beveled gears are used with a 2:1 ratio. Both the ring and pinion gears are locked to the axle by two set screws. Axle is machined for a 1/8 inch woodruff key. Ring gear is also broached.

The Hot Rod Gearbox

The Hot Rod Series gearbox is wider than the standard gearbox. The reason is so no machining of the hardened steel gears is necessary. The axle diameter is 1/2 inch, with a 10 degree taper by 1/4 inch on each end. 1/4-28 nuts hold the inner wheel hub with a 10 degree matching taper to the axle. The ring gear is locked to the axle with a 1/8 inch Woodruff key and two 1/4-20 set screws set 90 degrees apart. The gear tightens down on the key and a machined flat spot on the axle. The pinion gear is locked to the input shaft with two set screws. The drive arrangement between the engine and the gearbox is the same as the standard gearbox. As with the standard gearbox a flywheel and tapered collet can be provided at an additional charge.
